Garmin Settings?

Checking out the Garmin while running at IM Louisville.
I had an athlete recently ask what he should have displayed on his Garmin Forerunner 910xt.  Thought it was a good question, so wanted to share the answer here as well.
As a bit of background info I have been using Garmin products since the first Forerunner 101 came out.  Back then it was strapped to one wrist while my old HRM was strapped to the other (I looked like a dork...) I am not as much of an expert as DC Rainmaker (a blog I highly recommend you check out if you are interested in the technology of triathlon training) but I enjoy learning about new technology and how devices can help me and my athletes with our training.
I am currently using the Garmin Edge 500 as my primary computer on the bike and love using the Garmin Forerunner 910xt while swimming and running.  I have the Garmin cadence/speed sensor on my road bike, though on the tri bike cadence comes from my Quarq powermeter.  I've recently added the foot pod sensor for running as well. At races last summer I had the 910xt running in multisport mode for the whole race. I would be totally lost without my Garmin devices, don't know how anyone could make good decisions to race effectively without them.

As for what to "watch on the watch", it is all personal preference and some are a bit obvious but the ones I strongly recommend are in bold -

Bike
Screen 1 - 3” Avg Watts, HR Zn, Cadence, Speed;

Screen 2 - Total Distance, Lap Avg Speed (I auto-lap every 10-15 miles), Total avg speed, Total Time, Normalize Power Lap
Screen 3 - Time of Day, Calories burned, Temperature

Run
Screen 1 - Lap Distance (I auto-lap every mile), HR Zn, Lap Pace, Lap Cadence
Screen 2 - Total Time, Total Distance, Total Avg Pace, Total Average Cadence
Screen 3 - time of day, Training Effect, Calories burned.

When I go to a hilly place like Colorado I will add elevation to the bike settings.  When I was riding last summer in KY and in Maryland I added elevation gained to my third bike screen just for curiosity, but around Kansas City I find its sort of mute, at least until I get home and upload the file.
I have my devices set to Auto-pause while I'm training but on race day I obviously turn that feature off.

Please feel free to add a comment below if you have other suggestions regarding setup, always open to ideas.

2014-15 Uniforms Now Available for Order

Once or twice per year we open up the Midwest Triathlon Coaching gear store hosted by Zoca Gear (our manufacturer)  The store is now open until March 30th.
Here are the things you need to know about MTC gear and the gear ordering process -
  1. Every year I get lots of comments from athletes saying how great it was to hear others cheering for them when they are out racing.  When you are feeling a bit down a "GO MTC!" can equal free speed.
  2. I've also received comments from athletes saying how disappointed they were that they didn't order MTC gear and then missed out on all the camaraderie and team spirit.
  3. This uniform design will be the same for the 2014 and 2015 seasons, we only change designs every two years.
  4. Tri kits are great for racing and training bricks; BUT
  5. Bike jersey and bike shorts are more appropriate for training rides so I suggest ordering both.
  6. Tech tees are great for running races & training, wearing around before/after events and is the "official" shirt to wear when you are up on the podium picking up your Age Group Award :)
  7. "Men's" marathon singlet is exactly the same as the women's, but ladies should size accordingly when ordering
  8. We have kid's gear for those of you with young athletes looking to race
  9. You order and pay Zoca directly.  They will manufacture and ship the gear straight to you. We should have the gear back around the first weekend of May.
  10. You do not have to be a currently coached athlete to purchase MTC gear. If you are part of the "Racing Team" or an extended member of the MTC Family (former athletes, spouses, children, friends etc) please consider ordering as well - happy to have you sporting this great looking gear!
Final Note -  I have to order my personal stuff now too.  I don't "stock" any gear and don't order anything "extra", (people ask every time...) so if you want something, you need to order it now.

To order please go to - http://mwtri.zocagear.com

Request for Bike Trainers

Do you have an old trainer you'd be willing to donate?  We are working on developments for the new MTC Youth Team (more info coming shortly).
Because of safety concerns (which are different for a group of 10-15 year olds) we'd like to be able to do a lot of our cycling working using trainers.  If you have one you'd be willing to donate to our new Team please contact me - ken@mwtricoach.com.  The trainer doesn't need to be anything fancy, just in decent working order.
Thank you.
